Thirty-Nine Seconds
Venezuela, June 2026 — and what went out of the warehouse after it.
On the night of 24 June two earthquakes, magnitude 7.2 then 7.5, struck northern Venezuela thirty-nine seconds apart. Scientists call it a seismic doublet. In the state of La Guaira roughly eighty per cent of buildings came down.
A month later: 5,546 dead, 16,740 injured, 17,907 families without a home, and 23,122 people still living in 107 temporary shelters across Caracas and La Guaira.
The first load out of Interstate Avenue was a 53-foot trailer packed wall to wall with toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning supplies and personal care products — the ordinary things nobody thinks about until they are gone. Behind it went three containers holding 800 brand-new emergency cots, and then a 40-foot container of folding hospital beds.
