Two chairs, five hundred and fifty patients a month
Because of your generosity, Jezreel International donated two fully equipped dental chairs, placed with the Order of Malta in the rural clinics where they would do the most good. What followed has changed hundreds of lives every month since.
María supports her family as a single mother on roughly sixty-four dollars a month. When her daughter Dulce needed dental care, a single extraction at a private clinic could cost close to a month's income — a choice no parent should have to make.
Then the local health centre received one of the chairs. Under Dr. Franzué it now sees around three hundred patients a month, most from low-income rural areas, and the work has shifted from emergency extractions to cleanings, preventive sealants for children and more advanced procedures, all at no cost. Dulce smiles without pain. María goes home knowing her daughter's health did not come at the expense of the family's next meal.
At the second clinic Dr. Dorlin had been unable to carry out even an upper-jaw extraction, because there was no way for a patient to recline safely. JZRL's donated ergonomic dental unit changed everything. It now serves roughly two hundred and fifty patients a month, among them families who lost everything in a volcanic disaster and had never in their lives seen a dentist.
Among them too are adolescent girls from a local protection home, survivors of domestic violence and trafficking. For them a toothache was one more layer of pain in a life already marked by it. One had never seen a modern clinic. When the chair began to recline she was frightened, and the dentist guided her through it with patience, turning fear into trust. After days of pain she was finally treated, in a room that honoured her dignity.
